Ephedra or Ma Huang, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat allergies, asthma, lung congestion, chills, colds, hay fever, coughs, oedema, fever, flu, headaches, and nasal congestion. Ephedra has been similarly
employed in Indian folk medicine since ancient times.
Because of its ability to stimulate the CNS(Central Nervous System) and it’s thermogenic properties, ephedra has been employed to lose weight and enhance performance in endurance training and body building, a reason why ephedra became quickly one of the main active components used in dietary supplements. It is used by itself, or as a part of the infamous ECA (Ephedra-Caffeine-Aspirin) stack.
However, a number of life-threatening adverse effects have been reported with the use of ephedra which includes hypertension, palpitations, tachycardia, stroke; and seizures, and even death.
