Cannabis, also known as marijuana, weed, grass, ganja, pot, kif, hemp etc. is one of the oldest psychoactive plants known to mankind. It is native to the regions of Central Asia, but is spread all over the world. Marijuana has been used since thousands of years both recreationally and medically.
The use of cannabis in Ancient India was claimed in the Atharva Veda in app. 1600BC, wherein cannabis or Bhanga, is one of five herbs employed to ‘release us from anxiety’. Cannabis was said to be well established in Ayurvedic medicine by 300–400BC, and in Unani (Arabic medicine).
However, by the twentieth century, medical use of cannabis had largely declined, and its consumption for medical purposes was already very limited when in 1961 cannabis was included in the United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs and classified as a drug that had no medical uses.
In the past 20 years, however, there has been a resurgence of patient interest in using cannabis and cannabinoids to treat a variety of conditions, including chronic pain, cancer pain, depression, anxiety disorders, sleep disturbances and neurological disorders, the symptoms of which are reportedly improved by using cannabis.
But many people, specially youngsters are taking this as a gateway to free and uncontrolled use of Marijuana and its by-products in the name of health.
